To Do
History
The area is also steeped in history with castles around every corner including Dunrobin Castle, Eilean Donan Castle and Cawdor Castle which famously featured in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie led the 1745 Jacobite uprising, and Fort George, the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, are nearby. The ancient Clava Cairns and Standing Stones and the Corrimony Cairns dating back to around 2000BC are also within easy reach.
Golf
As Scotland is the home of golf, there is a range of championship golf courses in the Highland area including Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart, Moray, Nairn and Spey Valley. However, you may also wish to sample one of the lesser known gems such as Aigas, Boat-of-Garten, Brora, Fort Augustus or Grantown-on-Spey.
Whisky
Perhaps the best known of Scottish exports, whisky may well be an essential ingredient of your Highland experience. If so, there are many distilleries within easy reach of the cottages many of which offer tours and an insight into the whisky making process including Glen Ord and Benromach to name but a few.
Activity
The area offers a wide range of leisure and sporting opportunities such as hill walking, pony trekking, mountain biking and fishing. In the Cairngorm National Park there is ski-ing and snow-boarding in season and on the Rothiemurchus Estate you can enjoy a wide range of activities including clay shooting, quad biking and land rover safaris. Boots 'n Paddles is an excellent local activity provider which can offer kayaking, abseiling, archery and many more activities.
