You might like to take a boat trip with Jacobite Cruises on Loch Ness stopping off at the ruined Urquhart Castle, dating back to the 13th century, on the shores of the loch. Inverness - the capital of the Highlands - is only a 20 min drive from the cottages and hosts a castle, cathedral, excellent shops, leisure centre/aquadome, Eden Court Theatre and cinemas.
The Highland area is famed for its majestic, mountainous landscapes and rugged coastlines all teeming with wildlife including golden eagles, red deer, seals, otters and even a dolphin colony in the nearby Moray Firth. The National Nature Reserve Glen Affric is reputed to be the most beautiful glen in Scotland with wonderful walking and wildlife-spotting opportunities and is just a half hour drive from the cottages.
